Weapon System Guide

Everything you need to know about weapons in Lost Soul Aside: the weapon form system, upgrading your arsenal, and choosing the right tool for the job.

Weapon System Overview

Lost Soul Aside has a unique weapon system centered on weapon forms. Rather than collecting dozens of discrete weapons, Kael wields a single mystical armament that can transform between multiple forms, each with distinct properties, attack animations, and strategic applications.

The weapon form system allows you to carry multiple "loadouts" of combat capability at all times, switching between them instantly during combat. This is a core part of what makes the combat system deep and expressive: rather than committing to a single weapon for an entire encounter, you're encouraged to adapt dynamically.

Key Concepts

  • Weapon Formsifferent configurations of Kael's armament. Each form has unique basic attacks, heavy attacks, and often a form-specific special ability.
  • Form Switching: Switch between active forms instantly with a button press. This can be done at any time, including mid-combo, and has no cooldown.
  • Upgrade Paths: Each form can be upgraded using materials found throughout the world. Upgrades improve damage, unlock new attacks, and sometimes add special effects.
  • Material Sourcing: Upgrade materials come from defeating enemies, opening chests, breaking environmental objects, and purchasing from merchants.

Weapon Forms

Based on community reports from the released game, here are the weapon forms that players have documented. Note that the exact names and properties may varyiscovering all forms is part of the game experience.

Starting Form: Balanced Sword

The form you begin the game with. It's a versatile sword with no extreme strengths or weaknesses. Good reach, decent speed, solid damage. This form is capable of handling any situation adequately if not spectacularly. Recommended for learning enemy patterns and basic combat flow. Upgrade this form early since it's your most consistent tool.

Additional Forms (Discovered Through Progression)

As you progress through the story, you unlock additional weapon forms. Each one tends to excel in specific areas:

  • Fast Formrioritizes attack speed over damage per hit. Excellent for building combo meter and applying status pressure. Weaker against armored enemies but shreds unarmored foes. Good for generating resources quickly.
  • Heavy Form: Slow but powerful. Deals high damage per hit and can stagger or interrupt most enemies. Excellent against armored targets and bosses with punish windows. Requires careful timing since recovery frames are long.
  • Reach Form: Extended range at the cost of some damage. Useful for crowd control and engaging enemies from safer distances. Particularly effective against groups and flying enemies.

Upgrade System

How Upgrading Works

Each weapon form has an upgrade level that increases as you invest materials. Upgrades are permanent and improve base stats (attack power, speed, etc.) while sometimes unlocking new moves or passive bonuses specific to that form.

Upgrade Materials

Materials are categorized by tier. Lower-tier materials are common from early enemies and chests; higher-tier materials come from tougher enemies, boss drops, and hidden caches:

  • Common Materialsropped by basic enemies, found in early areas. Used for the first few upgrade levels of any form.
  • Uncommon Materials: Found from elite enemies, side quest rewards, and hidden chests. Required for mid-tier upgrades.
  • Rare Materials: Boss drops, late-game areas, and challenging optional content. Required for the highest upgrade levels.
  • Special Materials: Unique items tied to specific quests or discoveries. Some unlock unique upgrade paths or special effects.

Upgrade Priorities

Materials are finite (at least initially), so it pays to be strategic about what you upgrade first:

Choosing a Form for Your Playstyle

Since Lost Soul Aside's weapon system uses forms rather than discrete weapons, the choice isn't about finding "the best weapon" but about which forms best support your preferred approach to combat:

Aggressive Players

If you love staying in the enemy's face and never letting up, lean on the Fast Form for building resources, then switch to the Balanced Sword for finishers. The constant switching keeps pressure high and recovers resources quickly.

Technical Players

If you enjoy precision and parrying, the Balanced Sword's versatility is your best friend. Its moderate speed gives you control over engagement pace. Pair it with the Reach Form for safe poking against dangerous enemies.

Power Players

If you like big numbers and staggering enemies, the Heavy Form is your primary tool. Time your attacks carefully and learn which enemy attacks leave them exposed long enough for your slow swings to land.

Adaptive Players

If you enjoy switching tactics on the fly, keep all forms evenly upgraded. The ability to respond to any situation with the right form is powerful, especially on higher difficulties where enemy variety is greater.
